The Capitol Theatre presents this event as part of its 7th annual INDIGENOUS CULTURAL CELEBRATION:
As a cultural cornerstone in Nelson, the Capitol Theatre has played an integral role in fostering community through its programming for the last 30 years. During this time, the theatre has embarked on multiple collaborations and more recently has specifically connected with the community through projects that embrace inclusivity, artistic expression and the subject of reconciliation.
Each year the Indigenous Cultural Celebration event engages Indigenous dancers, storytellers and musicians and offers an opportunity to the community at large to join in the conversation of reconciliation, to show respect to all Indigenous people throughout the region and to support the acknowledgement of traditional territories in this area.
“From The Heart” is an annual project coordinated by Andrea Mann and supported by Videa, the Nelson Library, the Capitol Theatre, the Province of BC, the Government of Canada, and Canada Service Corps. Andrea describes the 2022 iteration -” Living Truth and Right Relations”:
This year’s process has been about expanding, deepening and persisting. The opportunities to learn and connect have been beautiful, and we want to celebrate another turn in the cycle by sharing our work with you again. As in our save the date email from a while back, we’d also like to invite you to join our process.
Next week, Wednesday Mar. 9 6:30pm, we will be showing our 45-minute film at its premiere at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson. This free event will also include a short collaborative poetry workshop, closing with a Q&A with some of the youth.
This year’s theme, Living Truth and Right Relations is summarized by the following…
Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth navigate the truth through courage and mutual support. Cultural teachers near and far inspire us to build ethical ways of being that bring us together and build strength. The resilient joy of Two-Spirit teachings show us that authenticity and freedom in identity and relationship are a right, a responsibility and a gift.
The collaboration this year has included schools in Salmo, Trail, Castlegar, South Slocan and New Denver, as well as a few older community youth, and a large circle of cultural teachers, mentors and artists.
As we close this cycle, we are already looking toward starting a new round for 2022-23, which we will begin to communicate about in April. Attending our event next week will be a good way to find out more about the work that we do, and help us spread the word for new participants and supporters. Maybe you will also join us?
Thank you for being part of our circle of care and solidarity.
