Showcase 2 @ 7pm with Sapphire Guthrie and Juliana Kopp

so·journ
/ˈsōjərn/
noun
a temporary stay.

Our featured emerging artists are by definition sojourners. Their development as young musicians dictates that they stay in one place long enough to collect experience and tools to then propel them into the next of their endeavours.

They are at a pivitol place in their lives and musical studies – after the 2020/21 year of studies taking place entirely online, each of them has persevered and flourished through this current year of in-person collaboration and guidance at Selkirk College in the Contemporary Music and Technology Program.

In this particular spring season, The word “emerging” holds an even weightier significance as we all begin to take bolder steps back into connection with each other. The Capitol Theatre invites you to this celebration of young artistic excellence and resilience.

Sapphire Guthrie:
Sapphire Guthrie is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter based in Nelson, BC, Canada.
Over the majority of her life she has been exploring her love of songwriting, and during the 2020 covid lockdown, she dedicated herself to writing a four-album box set titled “All My Gems and I, volumes 1-4”, and was a featured artist in “Back to the Stars” – a film integrating original compositions with a learning of Indigenous connection to land.
She draws inspiration for both writing and performance from artists such as k.d. lang, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Nikki Yanovsky, and Buffy Sainte Marie.
Sapphire is currently completing her final year as a performance major in the Selkirk College music program in Nelson, BC.

Juliana Kopp:
Juliana is a singer and songwriter originally from London, Ontario, now living in Nelson, BC and graduating from the Music and Technology program at Selkirk College in April. Juliana has been playing piano since the age of four and began singing at twelve. In high school, she began collaborating with other like-minded musicians and at age eighteen, formed “Triad” – a band which competed and placed in London’s battle of the bands and highlighted the groups ability to perform 3-part harmonies.
Juliana continued with “Triad” playing gigs and fundraisers until she moved to British Columbia 2 years ago to explore her love of rock music, improve her skills on the piano, and study song-writing and voice.
