FILM/TALK

Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art and History and the Capitol Theatre are presenting “People, Place & Politics: A Look at Human Migration and Refugees”.

This evening will start with a screening of a short film from the Gu Xiong “The Unknown Remains” exhibition opening of Adam O Thomas. Gu was born in Chongqing, Sichuan, China in 1953 and at age 17 was sent to a labour camp where, over the next five years, he honed his drawing skills by filling sketchbooks with scenes of rural life. He immigrated to Canada in 1989 after a successful yearlong residency at the Banff Centr for the Arts.

There will also be a screening of a short film “Through These Eyes” by local filmmaker Lynn Trinh; an introspective look into the different experiences of five Asian youth. Discover what it means to them to live as an Asian in the small, pedominantly Caucasian, mountain town of Nelson.

The screenings will be followed by individuals speaking from their own lived experience as refugees and immigrants and will conclude with a panel discussion.
