One of the most compelling voices to emerge from the Montreal music scene, singer-songwriter Molly Sweeney was born in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario.
A self-taught vocalist and guitarist, Sweeney was working at a music venue in the heart of Montreal’s indie scene where she joined Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush, singing leads on three albums on Constellation records, Against the Day, Monogamy and The Big Mango. As a back vocalist, Molly has performed with artists including The Barr Brothers, Basia Bulat, Matana Roberts, Old Man Luedeke and Little Scream and is a go-to studio vocalist for Montreal producers such as Howard Bilerman, Patrick Watson, and Adam Cohen. Sweeney was a guest vocalist on Leonard Cohen’s 2019 release Thanks for the Dance.
Sweeney’s self-produced debut album Gold Rings and Fur Pelts was released in June 2011 to critical acclaim. Ann Powers of NPR compared her to “a young Kate Bush” and The Globe and Mail likened her to Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. She has shared the stage with a diverse slate of musicians including Ron Sexsmith, Josephine Foster, Scout Niblett, MV and EE, White Magic, Sally Seltmann, Thomas Hellman, and Doug Paisley, performing at festivals across Canada and the United States. Recently settled in rural British Columbia, Sweeney takes the stage with new songs that electrify her folk roots, taking her songwriting, sound and voice to new heights.
Sweeney will be joined on stage by Mike Rud, Graham Tracey and Rob Fahie.
