Look for the Silver Lining, features the stylish vocals of award winning and Nelson local, Rachel DeShon and pianist extraordinaire Konrad Pluta in a new collaboration. It pulls music from the Great American Songbook, songs of the 20s, 30s and 40s, with innovative arrangements and vocal lines and travels from jazz to opera, Bach and back. Look for the Silver Lining was developed in part by the LAUNCH series at The Studios and produced by The Royal Room in Seattle, Washington.

“In 2016, after having spent much of last few years in and out of hospitals and long-term care facilities assisting others, I saw how incredibly therapeutic and important music is in the recovery and healing process. So, I set out to create a show for what I call the “hidden” people of our society. It was developed specifically to be performed in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities and other nontraditional venues. I use familiar literature, while incorporating my own stories and diverse musical arrangements. This is a positive and uplifting show and one that does not underestimate the capabilities of the audience and the journeys they are able to take. The week before I started working on this show, I visited a dear friend of mine after she was placed in ICU. She wasn’t responding and her daughter finally asked her if she wanted me to sing to comfort her and she nodded yes. I sang for over an hour and she slowly woke up; she began to move her hands and open her eyes. It was such a beautiful moment and one of the most rewarding experiences. It is not often that an artist can give themselves to someone in their time of need and I couldn’t think of a better time to perform this concert for my own community in Nelson. I want to take the audience on a journey far away from the chaos and discomfort they might currently be facing, even if only for the brief hour of a concert.” – Rachel DeShon.

With a voice that has been called “undeniably fantastic”, local Nelson resident Rachel DeShon was the winner of Marvin Hamlisch’s Search for a Star competition with the Seattle Symphony and performed on his national tour. Rachel is at home with symphonies, in opera houses, theatre productions and even circus tents. Rachel has proven herself to be an extremely versatile performer and strives to use the classical voice in unexpected, non-traditional ways. Rachel was seen in the Broadway bound revival of The Secret Garden at the 5th Avenue Theatre. In 2017, she released the exotica tribute album Taking Yma Sumac One Step Further with San Diego’s Creepxotica. Deemed “Seattle’s Littlest Diva” she’s performed with Marvin Hamlisch, Joan Baez, Ann Wilson, Thelma Houston, Martha Davis, Norman Durkee, Lilianne Montevecchi, and Frank Ferrante. She’s appeared as a guest artist with the Boston POPS!, Seattle Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, Teatro ZinZanni, Seattle Men’s Chorus, 5th Avenue Theatre, and at Singapore’s Esplanade Hall. In Nelson she was recently seen as ‘Donna’ in Mamma Mia! with Black Productions. Rachel immigrated to Nelson settling here with her husband Jean-François Gabanna.
