Free Event – Learning Circle: Lesley Garlow

THIS IS A FREE EVENT.

Registration is now open for a free Learning Circle with Lesley Garlow around Jaime Black’s, “REDress Project” and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
This 1 1/2 hour opportunity for learning and discussion will be co-hosted by the Capitol Theatre and the West Kootenay Rural Teacher Ed. Program and will be held on June 5th at 10:30 am at the WKTEP campus on Baker St. with registration limited to 20 participants.

Lesley Anne Garlow is of mixed ancestry: Haudenosaunee from Six Nations of the Grand River, Cayuga,Turtle Clan, since time immemorial on her mother’s side and Kanien’keha, Italian and Irish descent on her father’s side.
She has resided in the unceded territories of the Sinixt, Ktunaxa and the Secwépemc since 1990 – from Revelstoke to Salmo.
Lesley is a graduate of the Selkirk College Social Service Diploma Program with a certificate in Mental Health and Addictions and is now a student at the University of Victoria in the Faculty of Human and Social Development with Indigenous specialization.
She currently works with the Nelson Museum Archives and Gallery.

As an Indigenous woman, mother, sister daughter, and grand-daughter living in this unceded territory, Jaime Black’s REDress Project is close to her heart.
Over the past 2.5 years, Nelson museum has been working closely with Jaime Black and Colville Confederated Tribes Sinixt spokesperson, Shelly Boyd, to share resources and to raise awareness regarding the long regional history of violence against Indigenous women and the connection to MMIWG (Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls) nationally and internationally.
Lesley has been doing this work for the past 38 years through lived experience, heart break, education, resilience and activism.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH THE WEBSITE DEFAULTS TO LIST THE CAPITOL THEATRE AS THE EVENT VENUE, THIS LEARNING CIRCLE WILL TAKE PLACE OFFSITE AT THE WKTEP CAMPUS ON BAKER ST. REGISTRANTS WILL BE SENT AN EMAIL WITH FULL DETAILS BEFORE JUNE 5TH.
