5th Annual Indigenous Culture Celebration

Adults: $10
Students: $5

As a cultural cornerstone in Nelson, the Capitol Theatre, has played an integral role in fostering culture and community engagement through its programming for the last 30 years. More recently, the theatre has embarked on multiple collaborations specifically to engage with the community through projects that embrace inclusivity, artistic expression and the subject of reconciliation.

On Friday, March 6th, the Capitol in partnership with the Kootenay Lake School District, will host its 5th annual Indigenous Culture Celebration. Indigenous dancers and groups, representing multiple indigenous nations, have been invited to showcase featured solo and group performances. The community is invited to come out for an evening of Metis Jigging, Traditional Grass Dancing, Drumming circles, contemporary indigenous dance, as well as traditional Indigenous songs and spoken word.

Returning special guests will include Shelly Boyd, the Arrow Lakes Facilitator and member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservations, Jared Basil from the Yaqan Nukiy/Ktunaxa, Lower Kootenay Band, Metis Jigger Amy Cross, the Buffalo Stompers and River Journey dance groups and the Free Spirits Drummers.

New to the stage this year the Capitol welcomes educator and storyteller Dan Nanamkin from the Chief Joseph Band of Wallowa, Nez Perce and Colville Confederated Tribes and musical talent by Native American Music Award nominee Tony Louis (Sinixt).

Each year this event extends the opportunity for local and regional Indigenous dancers, storytellers and musicians to participate and for the community at large to engage in the conversation of reconciliation and show further respect to all Indigenous people throughout the region and to support the acknowledgement of traditional territories in this area.

Come for the song and the stories and share in this night of Indigenous Celebration.
